And it Came Far Too Soon...

There's more than a little irony in the idea that I have been asked to do a new blog on the Custom Rodder website just as the magazine is being discontinued. Yes, you heard that right, Custom Rodder will be no more following the March 2007 issue, which is shipping off to the printer as I write this, and will arrive on newsstands and in subscribers' mailboxes in mid-December--just in time for Christmas!

It should go without saying that I think this is be a significant loss for those interested in personalized '50s and '60s cars. I really think that Custom Rodder has hit its stride recently, with the November '06, January '07, and upcoming March '07 issues being some of the strongest since I came on board a couple years ago. Then again, I may be a little biased. What do you all think?

As for the Custom Rodder subscribers out there, you will have your subscriptions transferred over to Rod & Custom magazine. Those of you who already have R&C subscriptions will have them extended. As it turns out, I will be making the move over to R&C myself, so hopefully I can inject some more coverage of '50s and '60s cars into the mix and help keep all of the Custom Rodder readers happy. I hope you'll continue to tune in, and to let me know how we're doing on our custom coverage.

3. You should have given it more time. Street rods are on their way out. It will only be a matter of time before 50s, 60s, and, dare I say, 70s customs will become the norm. I have a 70 Lincoln Mark III that I am customizing. Unfortunately, at this point, it doesn't look like it will be a cover car. :(

4. I just read the March 2007 issue and you went out in style. However, I have a disagreement with Chris Shelton's comment on the original Kaiser. He refers to the Kaiser as originally ugly; however, when it came on the market, the automotive magazines, notably Motor Trend, called it the most beautiful car of the year. It may be that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and it is true that Mr. J.F. Launier has created a gorgeous custom, but in my opinion he had an excellent base to work with. I have had two Kaisers, both mild customs using later Kaiser parts (this is when Kaiser parts could be found in the junkyards) and they were regarded around Detroit and around Phoenix as beautiful. The Phoenix unit was fast as well--had a Rocket Olds engine with 3-2bbl. carbs--made it from Phoenix to Garden Grove getting 18 mpg. which was good mileage for the time. And it could outdrag quite a few hot cars when challenged (some with more cubes than I had, but then the Kaiser was about as light as a comtemporary Chevy

5. This really bites. I finally found a mag worth subscribing to and they kill it. Last time I could find Custom Rodder on the shelf, which was rare. I got it home to pull out the card to send in a check.. no card. I thought it fell out Im thinking now there was never one in there.
I emailed to subscribe but never got a reply, now I understand why.
Sad to see a good mag full of true tastefull cars slip into the past like most good things.
Loved seeing the Mercs, Buicks and Chevys all smoothed not punked or pimped out like seeing grandma in a leather thong it`s just wrong!

6. I just found this mag a few month ago and now its gone. Darn shame:(
